At the end of 2008, a Christian book made a commotion throughout Taiwan and Hong Kong. It appeared on the headlines of many newspapers and was widely discussed in many talk shows, and due to popular demand the publisher had to rush many printings for this book. All this is because through the media and judicial investigations, we were exposed to the ugly face of the power and money exchanges made by Taiwan’s ex-First Family. Their so-called friendships were merely tradings of governmental projects or positions for money. When the son of ex-president Chen brought this book to his arrested father, the title of the book created a sensation in Taiwan society, for it seemed to describe perfectly the situation of the ex-First Family.
The author, Rev. Wang, said he wrote this book because people in Taiwan seem to embrace materialism while ignoring the more important aspects of life. The book’s title is So Poor That There’s Only Money Left. The author does not want to point fingers at certain politicians, but expresses this book is for everyone. Its purpose is to encourage each person to not single-mindedly pursue the “path of Living”- fame and wealth - but to also walk on the “path of life” – abundant spiritual life.
The book mentions a rich woman whose husband has a mistress and whose child left home for good. She said sarcastically to herself that she was “so poor that she only had money, nothing else”. Rev. Wang explains that we cannot just emphasize rich living, but also a rich life.
Rev. Wang graduated from National Taiwan University (NTU) with a bachelor degree of law, and then got a Ph.d. in Public Health. He was the associate professor at NTU medical school and Vice President of the Mackay Memorial Hospital. He then put aside these professions and dedicated his life in ministry. “ So Poor That There’s Only Money Left” was published in June 2008 by Olive Press in Taipei.
