Author: Christoph von Schmid Best For: Boys, Early Elementary - Junior High Pages: 123 Written in: 1768 - 1854 Strength of character lies in the determination to hold on to truth regardless of circumstances or consequences. The hero in this story proves that every seemingly insignificant deed is noticed by God. Even though his life is threatened by the prince and his guards, this young man's word is a treasure that will not be sacrificed; it will be rewarded in a most unusual turn of events. About the Author... Christoph von Schmid (1768-1854) was the pioneer writer of books for children, and his stories have been translated into twenty-four languages. He is regarded as the greatest educator Bavaria (Germany) produced in the eighteenth century. When he began writing stories for the children in his own life in the late 1700s, he did not consider making them available to the general public. In 1841, he published his writings in twenty-four volumes. In his introduction of this set, he explained that he most often read these stories to children after school as a reward, on the condition that they would write the story down at home. In this way, he became familiar with the patterns of thought and speech of children, and learned what impressed their minds and hearts. The Lamplighter Rare Collector Series is a beautifully bound collection of captivating, character-building literature, carefully selected and handsomely created. The beauty of a Lamplighter book is that character is not only taught, but is demonstrated through individuals whose character is tested through the storms of life. It was Scribner's editor who once wrote to Rawlings, author of The Yearling , “The characterization of a great book is that it is both juvenile and adult.” Within a year of the first printing of our Rare Collector books, we realized that we had indeed brought back to life literature that is enjoyed by both children and adults. In fact, these stories were originally called “fireside readings,” meant to be read aloud as a family. Lamplighter books are filled with real-life themes shrouded in mystery; although the innocent may suffer wrongfully, ultimately good triumphs over evil. These ageless thematic elements birth new hope to a culture burdened with fear and uncertainty. Today, parents are often frustrated as they attempt to counter today's culture with a biblical worldview. Lamplighter books can help. Parents, relax and enjoy precious moments with your family as the story does the teaching.
